In the same year that Oregon celebrated 150 years of statehood, the Chateau at the Oregon Caves marked its 75th anniversary, and the Oregon Caves commemorated 100 years as a National Monument.
Many special events took place during the 2009 season to remember the adventures, discoveries and experiences enjoyed at the Chateau and Oregon Caves since the Caves’ very discovery in 1874.
A mule pack-train reenactment of pre-1922 travel took place in June to kick off the festivities. Period costumed riders experienced what early tourists endured for the chance to see the Oregon Caves as they rode up the mountain from Caves Creek Campground. In July, Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski and the First Lady of Oregon joined in the Oregon Caves’ 100th Birthday Celebration during the weekend of July 12th. Special concerts, workshops and festivals took place throughout the season. Famous Pacific Northwest artist Paul A. Lanquist also created anniversary logos and a commemorative poster of the Oregon Caves and Chateau.
We invite you to come and be a part of the next 75 years of history in the making. The Chateau management and staff look forward to sharing their knowledge of and enthusiasm for this unique architectural wonder.
Looking ahead, a renovation of the structure is being planned for 2014. In the meantime, the Friends of the Oregon Caves and Chateau are active raising awareness and funds to restore the Chateau’s impressive collection of Monterey Furniture. The Friends are also currently collecting first-person narratives of visitor and staff impressions and experiences at the Chateau. Visit the Friends’ website to learn more about the crucial work they do to support the Oregon Caves and Chateau.
